2007/8 Club News

• 24/06/2008 - The Clacton Club Tournament shield was presented to Andrew Salmon
  Andrew scored 8½ points out of a possible 10 in the annual Swiss Handicap event.
  Closely behind, all on 7½ points, were David Pearce, John Lambert and Melvin Steele.
  The club Rapid-Play Tournament was also held.
  This was jointly won by Ray Scott, Andrew Salmon and David Pearce. all on 5 points out of a possible 6.
  

• 17/05/2008 - ECF National Quarter Finals - Under 100 (grade) - Suffolk beat Staffordshire, 7-5
  Suffolk scored six wins and two draws in this 12 board Inter-County match against "the Terriers" held at Leicester.
  Two Clacton players participated. Richard Myhill scored a win and Mike Coughtrey obtained a draw.
  

• 12/05/2008 - Start of Club Tounament
  The annual club tournament will start on 13th May and will be 10 rounds over 5 weeks.
  

• 11/05/2008 - Summary of League Standings
  Clacton have now played all their league matches for this season and all other results affecting placings are now in.
  

  The last published standings for the North Essex League, shows,
  Division One winners are Chelmsford A. Clacton A ended up in 8th place, out of 11 teams;
  Division Two winners are Brentwood A. Clacton B ended middle position, in 6th place out of 11 teams;
  Division Three winners are Brentwood B. Clacton C ended in 5th place out of 10 teams.
  

  In the Suffolk League, all results are in.
  Division One winners are Ipswich A. Clacton A ended in 5th place out of 6 teams.
  Division Two winners are Adastral Park A. Clacton B ended bottom of the 6 teams.
  

• 30/04/2008 - North Essex League Division 3
  Clacton C drew 2-2 with Witham C.
  Wins were scored by Mike Coughtrey and Andrew Todd.
  

• 29/04/2008 - North Essex League Division 2
  Clacton B lost, ½-3½, to Maldon B.
  Clacton's half point came from Andrew Todd who was held to a draw.
  

• 29/04/2008 - Suffolk League Division 1
  Clacton A were defeated by Sudbury A, 1½-2½.
  Clacton had a win from Mike Coughtrey and a draw from David Pearce.
  

• 23/04/2008 - North Essex League Division 1
  Stour Valley defeated Clacton A, 3½-½.
  Clacton's half point came from a draw by Melvin Steele.
  

• 23/04/2008 - North Essex League Division 3
  Clacton C were defeated by Brentwood B, ½-3½
  Clacton's half point came from a draw by Nigel Lake.
  

• 22/04/2008 - Suffolk League Division 2
  Clacton B beat Sudbury B, 3-1.
  Melvin Steele and Richard Myhill gained wins. Danny Hardman and Mike Coughtrey were both held to draws.

  Billericay A drew 2-2 with Clacton B.
  John Lambert gained a win. Mike Coughtrey and Nigel Lake were both held to draws.
  

• 15/04/2008 - North Essex League Division 3
  Clacton C drew 2-2 with Wethersfield.
  Clacton's board wins came from Nigel Lake and Ray Scott.
  

• 15/04/2008 - North Essex League Division 1
  Clacton A gained a 4-0 win when Chelmsford B defaulted this match.
  

• 08/04/2008 - Suffolk League Division 1
  Clacton A are claiming a 4-0 win by default as Bury Cannons A did not turn out for this match.
  

• 02/04/2008 - North Essex League Division 1
  Colchester A were defeated by Clacton A, 1½-2½.
  A much needed win as both teams have been bottom in this division.
  Clacton's winners were David Pearce and Peter Keffler. Andrew Salmon was held to a draw.
  

• 02/04/2008 - North Essex League Division 3
  Colchester D were defeated by Clacton C,1½-2½.
  Wins cames from Mike Coughtrey and Ray Scott. Nigel Lake was held to a draw.
  

• 01/04/2008 - Suffolk League Division 2
  Division leaders Adastral Park A defeated Clacton B, 2½-1½.
  Clacton were outranked by an average of 30 grading points on each board, but still managed a win from Melvin Steele and a draw from Richard Myhill.
  

• March 2008 - Recognition of Mind Sports - Deadline now passed!
  The petition to the Prime Minister to give mind games such as chess equivalent status with physical sports is now closed. There were 1,419 signatures.
  

• 26/03/2008 - North Essex League Division 2
  Clacton B were defeated by Brentwood A, 0-4.
  (the third time Clacton B have been whitewashed this season)
  

• 25/03/2008 - Suffolk League Division 1
  Ipswich B beat Clacton A, 3-1.
  Clacton had draws on two boards, from Andrew Salmon and David Pearce.
  

• 25/03/2008 - North Essex League Division 2
  Clacton B beat Baddow B, 3-1.
  Clacton had wins from Melvin Steele, Danny Hardman and Andrew Todd.
  

• 18/03/2008 - North Essex League Division 1
  Clacton A were defeated by Writtle B, 1-3.
  Clacton had draws on two boards, from David Pearce and Peter Keffler.
  

• 18/03/2008 - Suffolk League Division 2
  Clacton A were defeated by Stowmarket A, 1-3.
  Clacton's only win was by Mike Coughtrey.
  

• 17/03/2008 - Suffolk League Under 125 Knockout (semi-final)
  Clacton were drawn against Woodbridge School for this semi-final.
  The board score was 2-2 with Clacton having a win from Mike Coughtrey and draws from Peter Keffler and Melvin Steele.
  Rules require elimination from the bottom board upwards to decide the winning team.
  Discounting Mike's win on board 4 meant a narrow defeat for Clacton and Woodbridge go through to the final.
  

• 13/03/2008 - North Essex League Division 3
  The home match for Clacton C against Colchester C (26/02/08) is now resolved.
  The adjudicated board was declared a draw, giving a 2½-1½ win to Clacton.
  

• 12/03/2008 - North Essex League Division 1
  Braintree A beat Clacton A, 3½-½.
  Clacton's ½ point came from a draw by Andrew Salmon.
  

• 11/03/2008 - Suffolk League Division 2
  Clacton B were defeated by Saxmundham A, 1-3
  Clacton had draws on two boards, from Nigel Lake and Andrew Todd.
  

• 05/03/2008 - North Essex League Division 3
  Colchester Royal Grammar School were defeated by Clacton C, 1½-2½.
  Clacton board wins came from Andrew Todd and Ray Scott.
  Mike Couftrey was held to a draw.
  

• 05/03/2008 - North Essex League Division 2
  Colchester B beat Clacton B, 4-0.
  (the second time Clacton B have been whitewashed this season)
  

• 04/03/2008 - Suffolk League Division 2
  Ipswich C drew against Clacton B, 2-2.
  Clacton's wins were from Melvin Steele and Richard Myhill.
  

• 28/02/2008 - North Essex League Division 2
  Chelmsford C were defeated by Clacton B, 1-3.
  Clacton's wins were by Melvin Steele, John Lambert and Mike Coughtrey.
  

• 26/02/2008 - North Essex League Knockout (final)
  Clacton's A and B teams did well to both reach the plate semi-final - but were drawn against each other !
  The A team played the final but were narrowly defeated by Maldon.
  The board score was 2-2 with Clacton having a win from Peter Keffler and draws from Andrew Salmon and John Lambert.
  Rules require elimination from the bottom board upwards to decide the winning team.
  Discounting the draw on board 4 has no effect so board 3 is the next to be taken out.
  Discounting Peter's win on board 3 made Maldon this years champions, and Clacton the runners up.
  

• 26/02/2008 - North Essex League Division 3
  Clacton C obtained at least a 2-2 draw in a home match against Colchester C, with board wins from Andrew Todd and Ray Scott.
  A possible third win by Danny Hardman, and hence an overall 1-3 match win for Clacton C, rests with the league adjudicator.
  

• 19/02/2008 - North Essex League Division 2
  Clacton B beat Dunmow, 3-1.
  Wins by Melvin Steele and Danny Hardman. John Lambert and Nigel Lake were held to draws.
  

• 18/02/2008 - North Essex League Division 1
  Baddow A were beaten by Clacton A, 1½-2½.
  Clacton's wins were by Rob Stephens and David Pearce. Andrew Salmon was held to a draw.
  

• 12/02/2008 - Suffolk League Division 1
  Ipswich A beat Clacton A, 3½-½.
  Clacton were outgunned, by an average of 30 grading points per board but managed to aviod a whitewash.
  The ½ point draw came from Peter Keffler.
  This reinforces Clactons position at the bottom of this division on 8 points, behind Manningtree on 10 points.
  Leaders Ipswich A are now looking unbeatable on 21 points, ahead of Ipswich B now on 13 points.
  

• 05/02/2008 - Suffolk League Division 1
  Bury Cannons A beat Clacton A, 3½-½.
  Clacton's half point came from a draw by David Peace.
  Clacton A now have only 7½ total points from the 6 matches played so far this season (out of 10).
  They now seem stranded at the foot of the table, behind Ipswich B who are on 9½ points.
  Leaders Ipswich A are currently on 17½ points.

  Witham B were beaten by Clacton B, 1½-2½.
  Clacton's wins were by John Lambert and Mike Coughtrey. Nigel Lake was held to a draw.

  Clacton A were beaten by Witham A, ½-3½.
  A whitewash was avoided by a draw from Andrew Salmon.

  Clacton were defeated by Adastral Park, 1-3
  David Pearce and Peter Keffler both obtained draws.

  Clacton A were beaten by Chelmsford A, 1½-2½.
  Clacton's only win was from Peter Keffler. John Lambert obtained a draw.
  

• 15/01/2008 - Suffolk League Division 2
  Stowmarket A defeated Clacton B, 3-1.
  Clacton's only win was from Melvin Steele.
  

• 13/01/2008 - County Matches - Suffolk v Cambridgeshire v Norfolk
  In the Under 150, Suffolk drew with Cambridgeshire 8-8, but lost to Norfolk 7-9.
  Clacton players Peter Keffler got one win and David Pearce got two draws.
  In the Under-100, Suffolk beat Cambridgeshire 8½ -3½, but lost to Norfolk 5 - 7.
  Clacton players: Mike Coughtrey and Richard Myhill each scored 1½ (out of 2).

  Clacton A beat Manningtree, 2½-1½.
  Peter Keffler got a win. Andrew Salmon, John Lambert and Andrew Todd drew.

  Both A and B teams lost round one matches fight on on round 2 to qualify for the plate prize.
  Clacton A increased their chances here in their away match against Baddow B.
  Board wins came from Andrew Salmon, David Pearce, Peter Keffler and Nigel Lake,
  making this a 0-4 whitewash win to Clacton.

  Clacton's point was a default, to Ray Scott, as Maldon fielded only three players.

  Maningtree won 3-1 against Clacton A.

  Clacton had a good start to the new season with the first round of this Cup, winning 3-1 against Sudbury.
