BRIGHTON SCANDAL!!

A story to anger our brave soldiers fighting abroad ?

According to the Press Complaints Commission the Argus were entitled to publish, as fact,
unsubstantiated statements from the police because they came from a trusted source and were
'on the record' . The result of this reporting which breached their Code** was that Argus readers were completely misled. The following is a list of some of the statements which were often accompanied by a large picture of a sad looking PC Cameron.

After 15 months the case was dropped when lawyers decided there was not enough evidence to
prove a stabbing ever happened. Sussex police dispute this.

Note:- The officer at the side of PC Cameron was close enough to pepper spray the man in the eyes
The fact that he did not witness the man holding an 8 inch knife or a stabbing was not reported.

** The PCC Code states:-
Our note.
'Accuracy iii)'   was over-ruled by the Commission and the Commissioner Sir Brian Cubbon, a decision that effectively protected the Argus.

In February 08 our new defence lawyers presented a court hearing with
conclusive evidence that my brother Alex did not carry out a knife attack as
falsely claimed by PC Cameron. After a further 3 months investigation the CPS
finally admitted defeat and the case was dropped as they were unable to prove
a stabbing ever happened. Remanded for 15 months Alex was then, on his
release, ignored by the CPS and the police who had violently arrested him.
During this period there were 4 court hearings and a massive waste of police
time at taxpayers expense. According to a letter to Des Turner MP we have
a situation where a police officer who tried to convict a vulnerable man is
supported by the Commander who believes a stabbing happened. It must be
of concern that he is prepared to support the word of a police officer regardless
of evidence to the contrary. After confusing an 8 inch blade with a small mobile
phone we would not be surprised if he is promoted to a Detective Sergeant.
It has become obvious that every trick in the book was used to try to convict
58 year old Alex who has no previous convictions and has never harmed anyone.
Brighton Police considered him easy prey and with the support of the duty defence
solicitors and the CPS a conviction seemed certain and they could act as they
pleased. The reason they did not succeed was largely due to family intervention
when at great financial and health related expense the truth was uncovered.
Meanwhile the increasingly isolated Commander continues to bluff it out.
Our direct action to the court allowed the unmarked vest to be viewed and the
CPS were now in serious trouble. We requested answers from them regarding
the vest under the Freedom of Infomation Act and a reply required by law has
not been received. (statement follows).
With no confidence in the Commander, Graham Bartlett, the CPS or the duty
solicitors, Burchells we believe the innocent to be at risk as Alex's story reveals.
Sussex Police Authority, the Professional Standards Department, the Brighton
Argus, the Home Office and the BBC are aware of this website which is being
followed nation wide. All e-mails remain private.

The CPS (London) agreed that under the Freedom of Information Act the CPS
(Brighton) must answer two simple questions. Out of time they have yet to reply.
  1. When did the CPS first view the vest?
  2. Why were the defence denied access to the vest?

.....Just received from the CPS, a letter which in the vernacular states ...
nothing to do with us Guv sort it out with Brighton police!

It is now a year since the case against my 59 year old brother Alex was reluctantly dropped by the CPS, 15 months after his arrest, due to lack of evidence that he held the 8inch knife that found its way to PC Cameron via PC Roberts. With magical powers this knife was able to be in several hands at the same time and when held by Alex was described as a small mobile phone. Even PC Cameron could not understand how it transformed itself. Able to penetrate a stab vest with a life threatening force and still not leave a single mark on the vest it was to affect the minds of seven officers, the CPS, the defence solicitors Burchell Williams, as well as the Brighton Argus who all reported details of the stabbing. Perhaps most amazing of all was its mind blowing effect on the judgement of witness Dr. Read who caused Alex much suffering by failing to accept he was ill and required urgent medication. When he looked at the knife the black handle turned orange or red. The CPS were so concerned they refused to allow anyone near the vest or the knife and it was 10 months before a forensic report was obtained. PC Cameron, who received massive coverage in the Argus1 after famously fighting the knife before it finally plunged into his chest, still retains his certificate for bravery, scant reward for the nightmares he now suffers2. His colleague PC Hollingdale who was at his side was spared much of the horror of the attack as the 8inch knife was only visible to Cameron.
However as he had no choice other than to carry out the instructions of the officer- in- charge he pepper sprayed Alex in the eyes, twice. At no stage did he witness Alex with a knife and he deserves great credit for his honesty. This mystery, involving a huge waste of taxpayers money and police time must be solved before other innocent victims are made to suffer.

1) The Argus who published several large pictures of PC Cameron with details of the stabbing including a nomination for the " Argus Achievement of the Year" award, prior to a trial, became a the subject of a complaint to the Press Complaints Commission and its Commissioner Sir Brian Cubbon, which lasted several months. The end result was that they would take no action against the Argus although they breached the Code regarding factual reporting.

2) According to Dr. Des Turner MP Sussex Police appear concerned that we are trying to make them rescind the award and they must therefore stand by their version of the events. The efforts Sussex Police made to achieve hero status for their officer, when trying to convict an innocent and vulnerable man, are reason enough that the award should stand and serve as an example to everyone of the criminal injustice they are capable of.

Latest news:   The Home Office have informed me that all cases of serious corruption must be referred to the IPCC. My view is that as they have the evidence the responsibility to carry this out rests with them. I will not be involved in an investigation which only concerns the police and ignores those who colluded with them. Meanwhile I will continue to inform everyone of the cruelty inflicted on a vulnerable and defenceless victim in order to gain an award and cover-up a botched mission. As an East-ender who survived the blitz they picked on the wrong person when they tried to convict my brother on a trumped up charge which could have sentenced him to life imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine. My intention is that by public awareness they will not try the same trick on other unfortunate victims.

A letter and documentation addressed FOR THE ATTENTION OF SUSSEX POLICE
AUTHORITY was diverted by Mrs. Longden to a third party without our knowledge.
Following answers obtained through 'Freedom of Information' we have discovered
why after 3 months the S.P.A. had not replied. We have been unable to trace our
'Brighton Scandal' documents and letter and have demanded they be returned.
The S.P.A. website show they have the following responsibilities.
'Scrutinising the Force' ' To oversee Sussex Police's 'Serving Sussex Pledge'
Apart from this the members should be aware of the actions of Brighton Police and
be allowed to consider our correspondence. This is particularly important as the
Commander, Graham Bartlett, still believes Brighton Police acted correctly.
Mrs. Dinah Longden should have returned our 'Brighton Scandal' correspondence
with a letter explaining why this was not suitable for Authority members. Our letter
was sent with the best of intentions and we should have been informed that it was
blocked. For those wishing to communicate with members of the Authority the
advice is to contact them directly.
I am grateful for the excellent support of those who have expressed their concern and anger.

(September 2009)
Cameron found the knife near where he assaulted Alex however PC Roberts admits he threw it there.
He was witnessed holding a mobile phone.
The man picked up the knife and plunged it into PC Cameron.
Accuracy iii) The Press, whilst free to be partisan, must distinguish clearly between comment, conjecture and fact.
The reports should not have been a complete statement of fact. For example they could
have included:- 'the case has yet to come to trial', or 'it was alleged by the
police'
